Title: Clubwater
Artist: Clubwater
Label: Shiny Happy Records, 2014

I’ve been a fan of Tamankota, I bought their EP, loved it, and still play it during my daily spare time. When Eko, Shiny Happy Records owner, told me that Tamankota would be transformed into a project named Clubwater, I was curious and dissapointed at first. I was not sure Clubwater would be as good as Tamankota. I was wrong about it.

Clubwater still has the same line as Tamankota in playing indiepop. However, Clubwater is much simpler I guess. The formation guitar/vocal-bass-drum brings out the freshness in a new form. Before having their EP, I have listened to their songs on soundcloud. And they put that two songs called ‘Happiness’ and ‘You’ on the EP. My first attention was about the packaging. The EP is on 3-inch CD-R which makes it very cute and match with the songs, with a picture of a girl in dominant pink on the cover (a bit reminds me of Belle and Sebastian’s Belle and Sebastian Write About Love in coloring) Oh, I haven’t told you about the songs.

The two songs are full of simple way in playing music in a band, no complicated part (which is so me), jangly guitar, delicious melody, and fun atmosphere. Acum, vocalist of Bangkutaman, described it in the liner notes that Clubwater is suitable for any seasons, whether it is spring, summer, autumn, or winter. The lyric is very easy to concern and make me smile every time I spin it. I really love this EP, and if you ask me why, I would just simply answer: because Clubwater always give me a spark of happiness whenever I play their songs. Not because they create a masterpiece, explore their music putting “strange” noise or sound, or showing their skills off all along the songs. Like the liner notes said, you will probably flick your fingers, shake your head and feet, and that’s what I do. The band also said on their press release (I read it on some webzines) that they are nuding pop music from all the gimmick and glory. Maybe that’s why I need no glorious reason to like them.

Ah, for more clues, why don’t you follow them on twitter or check out their soundcloud. It was for a sample. I do recommend you to buy the EP from Shiny Happy Records to get this cute-packed EP.

Just to be uncut and personal: FYI my CD-Rom doesn’t work for a while after I re-open and re-close it for several times just to put the EP in heavy rotation. It was on the first day I have the CD. Seriously.
