Artist: Benjamin Finger
Label: Watery Starve, 2014
Some musics are made as a music, some others made as if it was a painting - moving or not. I always believe that. And this Benjamin FInger album, 'The Bet', is one of the second one category.
Benjamin Finger, a musician from Norway, tried to paint another world. On the press release, it is written: "Norway’s Frank Benjamin Finger’s music is a bit like when you finally find that secret door in your house". The secret door itself is a key to jump to another dimension, like in the fiction movie or book. From all the ten songs in this album, the title seems trying to inform what the story is actually about. 'Kids Dreaming Land', 'Sulfurous Fog', etc are the example of the pictures he conveyed through ambient, noise, and some other mysterious strange sounds. The music character is about a mix of classical traditional and modern sci-fi element of sound. In the 'Sulfurous Fog' and 'Bad Luck Planet' for example, you will hear guitar string sound and ambient before it's getting more scientific with laserquest (?) or anything that makes the song sounds more modern like sci-fi movie.
I have to admit this kind of music is very segmented, but it exists. The musicians who prefer to choose this "painting way", abstract music, exist. And among them - as far as I noticed - 'The Bet' is one who combines traditional-modern with surreal, abstract, and even childish imagination. Oh, you have to see the artwork. It concludes the message very well. This album will be released on June 1st. You can give some listen to his soundcloud if you want to know more.
